IFS/ "Parts Work" Therapy for Trauma + PTSD
Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, sometimes called parts work, is based on the idea that our minds are super computers made up of different “parts” working simultaneously, each with its own feelings, needs, and roles. For example, one single client might have a part of their mind that feels anxious, a part that drinks to numb, and a part that tries to keep every one happy and calm. These parts develop as ways to help us cope, but sometimes they carry pain or get stuck in behavior patterns that cause distress or dysfunction.
HOW IT HELPS
In IFS, the therapist engages the client's imagination to help clients get to know their parts with curiosity and compassion, rather than judgment. By building a relationship with these parts, the client can resolve inner conflicts, find clarity, uncover self-compassion, and free themselves from burdens from the past. This may sound metaphorical, and it is, but this therapy treats PTSD, reducing if not entirely removing symptoms like nightmares and flashbacks and loss of control over behavioral reactions.
