Ashley Freeman, LICSW

Ashley was born and raised in West Virginia. She moved to Pittsburgh as a young adult yearning for a new experience. During this time, she did a lot of volunteer work, spurring her initial interest in social work. She went on to receive a bachelor's in social work from Chatham University. Ashley worked as a community health worker and a victim's advocate at Pittsburgh Action Against Rape. In this role, Ashley learned how essential it is for social workers in present day Appalachia to be proficient in working with people with Substance Use Disorders. This led Ashley to return to West Virginia to complete a master’s in social work at WVU, focusing on the treatment of substance use disorders. In her post-graduate professional roles at Community Cares of WV and WVU’s Carruth Center, she has greatly enjoyed working with people in recovery at all stages of change.

Therapy Approaches

As a therapist, Ashley approaches each client with compassion, empathy, and respect for their individual experiences. Ashley uses a blend of approaches including CBT, DBT, Humanistic Therapy, and Psychodynamic modalities to help individuals navigate personal challenges, heal from past trauma, and develop tools for emotional and psychological growth. Though Ashley has the most experience working with clients experiencing Substance Misuse/Addictions and Sexual Violence/Intimate Partner Violence, she has found that her approaches can also be helpful with people experiencing anxiety, mood and adjustment disorders, issues related to family of origin, and issues related to identity. In this phase of her career, she is working to expand her effectiveness working with trauma, women’s health issues, and Veteran’s health issues. Her style is warm, genuine, and enthusiastic. Ashley wants to see you living your life fully, and she will do her part to help you get there.
